Boxerchip’s Guide to the Perfect Crisp Sandwich

Well hello there Spudmuckers! How are we on this fine day? Now, we all know that spuds are darn tooting fabulous, and there’s nothing more worthy of some spud-loving praise than the crisp *drool*. All those flavours and textures, ah the possibilities are endless – and one of the best crispy delights to grace the planet is the infamous crisp sandwich, you cannot get better no way no how! One thing to keep in mind is that this delightful gourmet delicacy takes time and effort to perfect. But never fear grasshoppers! We are here to guide you through this gourmet process. Here is our ultimate guide to the one the only crisp sandwich.

1)     After checking your two slices of bread to ensure that they have a light and fluffy texture (it can be brown, white, wholemeal it’s all up to you my friend, it just has to be as puffy as a cloud) lay both slices out on a chopping board made of the finest quality – you don’t want to mess with the delicate balance of wheat in the bread after all.

2)     Next, butter your bread – take your time this bit is rather tricky – make sure your knife is brought to room temperature, gently lower it into your chosen form of spread and slowly slide it across the surface until you generate a lovely golden ribbon of butter. Next transfer this to the bread, dolloping equal amounts on each slice before gently smoothing a thin, even layer over every nook and cranny.

3)     You can now put your thinking caps on and get a little bit inventive (ooerrr). First things first, choose your ideal crisp flavour, whether that be the traditional salt and vinegar or the exotic sweet chili variety, it’s up to y’all. Once that all important decision has been made you can decide if you want to jazz this whole shebang up or not. Just think you could add France’s finest cheese, crisp iceberg lettuce and slice or ham or two, at a risk of repeating ourselves, it’s completely up to you – hey, we’re a poet and we didn’t even know it.

4)     Once you’ve settled on your fillings layer them over one slice of bread before placing the other on top and pressing down firmly until you hear the satisfying crack of the crisps (mmmm never has a sound ever sounded so sweet).

5)     Finally, cut your sarnie into your desired shape, squares, triangles, hearts the world is your oyster, and gobble away!

Boxerchips Crazy Summer BBQ Essentials!

Phew! The heat is on Spudmuckers, and that means only one thing… The return of the great British BBQ (hooray!). The BBQ is a time honoured tradition, and takes many years of practise (and domestic turmoil) to perfect. But, some crazy cats have rustled up some far out BBQ essentials to help ease your grill-induced stress and give you the perfect alfresco dining experience. The jury’s still out on these 5 weird and wonderful gadgets at Boxerchips HQ, but take a look:

Because we all want the piece of equipment used to cook our grub associated with aliens… We’ll pass on the Martian kebabs and stick to a good old beef burger thank you very much. That being said, it’ll save a lot of cleaning once the dreary months of winter have passed and that fine specimen of a grill can smoke its coals in all its glory.

Basically, you stab your hotdog, marshmallow or whatever else you fancy and crank the wheel to rotate the skewer – we do wonder what is wrong with an old fashioned skewer and a pair of hands, but hey we do love a fun yet unnecessary gadget.

Escape to the Sunshine: Top 5 European Spots to Visit

Summer is just around the corner Spudmuckers (wahooo) but as much as we all love good old Blighty, its Summer-time weather can be slightly hit-and-miss to say the least. Luckily for you, sun-drenched beaches are only a hop skip and a jump away. So, here are our pick of the best sunshine spots Europe has to offer…

1) Croatia

Croatia holds bundles of old world charms with Venetian inspired buildings, quaint cobbled streets and masses of warm sunny weather. Head to the charming Dubrovnik to marvel at the city’s beautiful architecture and explore the city walls of the old town which have spectacular views. The Adriatic Sea is second-to-none in terms of beauty, and you could be mistaken for thinking you’re in the Caribbean – yes the water is that clear. Whilst many of the beaches in Croatia are pebbly there are many sandy beaches to be found with a little exploring – why not explore the islands that sit off Croatia’s coast such as Hvar and Pag? Once you’re there, hire out a boat or a kayak and discover the beautiful coves the Croatian peninsula has to offer.


2) The Greek Islands

The Greek Islands are renowned for their beautiful weather, scenery, and hospitable locals. With this in mind, a trip to one of the hundreds of Greek Islands is a guaranteed winner. If you’re after picturesque beauty that includes white beaches and crystal clear waters head to Kefalonia – Myrtos Beach in particular. This beach is set in a deep, wide bay and graces the cover of countless guidebooks. Other iconic beaches include Navagio (‘shipwrecked’) Bay on the island of Zakynthos. Positioned on the West coast, underneath the village of Volimes, this beach is the most photographed on the island. In 1983, an illegal boat carrying cigarettes was washed off the shore of the bay. The white sand has now swallowed up the wreckage leaving only parts of its rusty body on show.


3) The Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve has been a European hot spot for years, and it’s no surprise. Just a short (and usually cheap!) flight away lies consistently beautiful weather and stunning scenery for holidaymakers to enjoy. Why not visit Lagos, home to some of the Algarve’s most photographed beaches, such as the spectacular Praia Dona Ana beach, which boasts white sand, Blue Ocean and dramatic cliffs and rock formations that make it perfect for exploring the secluded coves that are sandwiched between the cliff faces. The long and sandy Meia Praia beach offers every water sport imaginable, and if all the sunbathing gets too much, head to Lagos town to enjoy the array of seafood restaurants and learn some more about the town’s intriguing history!

This small island packs a big punch, and offers everything from quiet coastal villages to cosmopolitan nightlife. Malta’s Valletta has already been named the Capital of Culture for 2018, and has been described as an ‘open air museum’ with fantastic history, architecture and a beautiful harbour to enjoy. The Island is home to many open air venues that hold a variety of concerts and plays throughout the year and are not to be missed. If you fancy a change of pace, hop over to Malta’s sister island Gozo, which is immensely popular with tourists and locals alike, and enjoy the tranquil beauty of its beaches and beautiful sights such as the Azure Window.


5) Turkey

If you fancy somewhere exotic without the long-haul price tag then Turkey is the perfect choice for you. Turkey gives you Middle Eastern charm and temperatures at a fraction of the price of the likes of Dubai. You can explore the mesmerising mosques of Istanbul, and sample one of the city’s extensive networks of markets. Turkey also plays host to miles upon miles of beautiful coastline, and there is a resort to suite everyone! The infamous Oludeniz is one of the most photographed beaches in Turkey, for good reason. The white sandy beach stretches beyond the mainland and out into the sapphire sea and is also home to lush greenery. Sunbathing aside, the village is renowned for paragliding – the perfect way to fully appreciate the spectacular views. Take a visit to Kalkan if great food and a bohemian atmosphere are your idea of an ideal holiday. You can dine on fresh sea food and delicious Turkish cuisine, and spend your days lounging at beautiful beach bars scattered with hammocks and cushions galore. Finally, if you want something slightly out of the ordinary, Olympos is calling your name. Here you can stay in tree-top hotels metres from the beach, enjoying the beautiful scenery and meeting like-minded people – very popular with backpackers.

We Just Love Boxes: The History of another Famous Box – The Jack-In-The-Box!

Boxerchips are all about the box. So, it’s a given that here at Boxerchip HQ we’re obsessed with anything box-related. With that in mind, we thought we’d take all you Spudmuckers on a walk down memory lane and give you the low-down on another famous box – the one and only Jack-in-the-Box (insert round of applause here)!

The Jack-in-the-Box has been around the block a few times, and still remains one of the world’s most famous toys. No one knows quite when and where it first came about, however. It is popularly believed that this much-loved toy can be traced back to the Middle Ages. The Jack-in-the-Box’s popularity arose from the surprise it delivered. Contrary to our bog standard music box, that merely plays a pretty tune, once the tune comes to an end the Jack inside the box will pop out on a spring and unlatch the box’s lid – the scoundrels.

One of the earliest Jack-in-the-Boxes was made by a German clock-maker, way back in the 1500s! It played a jolly little tune, and its ‘Jack’ was a comical devil – bizarre considering the Jack-in-the-Box was a present for the clock-maker’s son – but the trend for the ‘devil in the box’ sky-rocketed.

Toy mechanisms improved in the 1800s, meaning the Jack-in-the-Box became easier to produce (jackpot eh?? Yes we know our wit is astounding). The toy became a common play thing, and the image of the devil in the box also became a popular caricature for taking the mick out of politicians. This meant that the Jack-in-the-Box soon catered to adults as well as children (oh they were a business-savvy lot weren’t they?!).

Today we do not typically associate the Jack with the devil – it’s said that this association receded during the Renaissance period when Jesters began to replace the figure of the devil. To this day clowns remain popular Jack-in-the-Box inhabitants.

People continue to be amused by this delightful figure even in contemporary society, even though, strangely enough, they know exactly what is going to happen. We can’t blame them really… After all, boxes and their delightful contents are pretty darn epic. Long live boxed treats!

Boxerchips’ List of The UK’s Best Cities to Visit

Ahh Spudmuckers, we meet again! The Bank Holiday season is well and truly upon us, and with the next one fast approaching, the lovely folks down at HQ thought it would be an utterly splendid idea to put together a list of fabulous cities to visit in Blighty. So sit back, relax and we dare you to not book a cheeky trip away to one of the UK’s best cities…


This Scottish gem is truly worth a butchers. The picturesque streets are teaming with bespoke shops and places to stop off for a cuppa or two. Soak up the glorious views at the top of Arthur’s Seat (it’s an extinct volcano you know!) and give yourself an epic cardio workout along the way (win win). Make sure you pencil a trip to the spectacular Edinburgh Castle, wander around the lofty building and prepare yourself for the daily field gun to let rip at 1pm. If you’re lucky enough to be there in August don’t forget to get involved with the stack of activities and plays hosted by the Edinburgh Fringe Festival – the biggest festival in the world, pretty darn epic if you ask us! Other must-visit-attractions include: Scottish National Gallery, National Museum of Scotland, Royal Botanic Garden and, of course, Edinburgh Zoo. Among all the excitement don’t forget to live like a local and sample a cheeky scotch or two!


Bristol is known by many as the jewel of the South West of England, and it’s easy to see why Spudmuckers – the city has something for everyone. Bristol has a cosmopolitan feel and is teeming with bars and coffee shops. Take a stroll along the riverbank that winds its way through the heart of the city and stop off at one of the many cafes and eateries that line its banks. If you’re in to art then Bristol is the place for you. Head to Nelson Street which is host the most ambitious permanent street art project ever to take place in the UK called ‘See No Evil’. Nelson Street is now one of the world’s largest outdoor art exhibitions (ooerr). Other fantastic attractions include: Brunel’s SS Great Britain – the world’s first ever ocean liner, Bristol Aquarium, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, and Bristol Zoo Gardens along with much more!


Liverpool has been voted Britain’s cultural capital, is the birth place of The Beatles and it’s a UNESCO world heritage site – we think it’s worth the visit wouldn’t you say? Liverpool is the world capital of pop with more number ones under its belt than any other city, so it would be an absolute travesty not to check out some of the up and coming talent performing in one of Liverpool’s many quirky bars and clubs. Continuing with the musical theme, no trip would be complete without paying homage to the legends that are The Beatles. Visit Albert Dock, where ‘The Beatles Story’ is held. Here you can follow the story of the fab four from their humble beginnings to world domination. Albert Dock is also home to the Tate Liverpool, which stages international exhibitions of the best in modern art.


Of course Spudmuckers you have to make a trip to the capital! From the London Eye to Buckingham Palace the possibilities are endless my friends. Take a walk along the embankment and marvel at landmarks such as Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. If the hustle and bustle of the city gets too much, head to one of London’s parks for a bit of rest and relaxation. Take in the beautiful landscaped gardens of Hampton Court Palace and stop and have a bite to eat next to Hyde Park’s lido. If it’s shopping you’re after, London is a shopaholic’s paradise – head to Oxford Street for high street buys, plus it’s a hop skip and a jump away from the designer delights of Bond Street and Regents Street (we can all dream eh?). If you’re after something a little bit more alternative head to the vintage shops of Brick Lane and Portobello Market.

Greetings from Boxerchips HQ! Now, we know that marathon season is in full swing and that we have some very active little Spudmuckers out there, but we want to make sure that you awesome marathon runners are giving yourselves the best chance to do as well as you can (aren’t we nice?!). We l-o-v-e a good carb here at Boxerchips – but sadly we know that sometimes they get a rough deal. Well, we’re here to tell you the mahoosive benefits you will reap from incorporating ‘good’ carbs into your marathon diet. Long live the carb!



Did you know that carbs can aid athletic performances?

Why? Simple – they give you bundles of energy! Carbohydrates break down into smaller sugars that get absorbed and give the body energy. ‘Good’ carbs – we’re talking wholegrain here people: Wholegrain bread, wholegrain rice, wholegrain pasta (you get the picture), break down into these sugars at a slower more leisurely pace. The result? They release energy over a longer period of time, meaning just when you think you can’t go on, BAM those good carbs come to the rescue with a blast of energy!

For a Spudmucker on the Go: Quick and Easy Microwave Meals

Aloha spudmuckers! Now, down in the land of spuds galore we have been singing your praises, blessing your poor souls and fretting over those busy days you all have to endure. We love a bit of rock’n and a roll’n, a to’n and a fro’n, ourselves, but filling your delightful little bellies with proper grub can fall by the wayside amongst the chaos. No! We say no little spudmucker should suffer from the old grumbly tummy due to a jazzy lifestyle. So Boxerchips HQ have come to the rescue once again, because we love you my dear fellows, and have rustled up two quick and easy meals that simply have to be popped in the microwave.

Loaded Potatoes: Broccoli and Cheddar Style

This simple recipe gives your basic jacket potato a bit of oomph, in record time!

Cut a wedge out of your potato about 1/8 inch wide and 1 inch deep. Next, put the little rascal onto a microwavable dish and place in the microwave, cooking it for 10-12 minutes. Remove and fluff the potato until it is as puffy as a midsummer’s cloud.

Add some buttery spread and a pinch of salt to your potato’s fluffy interior.

Aha! Now for the filling. Place a large cup of mini broccoli florets into a bowl with one tablespoon of water. Cover the tree-like lovelies and cook on a high heat for 2 minutes. Drain and sprinkle onto your seasoned potato.

Finally, sprinkle your potato with ¼ of a cup of cheddar cheese and microwave one last time on a high heat for 2 minutes.

Greek Salad Baked Potatoes

Who knew that you could fit a whole meal, and a hearty one at that, into the humble baked spud? Prepare to be amazed my friend.

Microwave your potatoes for around 15 minutes, or until tender when pierced with a fork, then remove (careful now, don’t burn those fingers will you).

Combine 1 cup of chopped and de-seeded vine tomatoes with 2 tablespoons of chopped onion, 4 coarsely chopped black olives, 2 teaspoons of red-wine vinegar, 1 ½ teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil with some dried oregano, salt and pepper.

Finally, spoon the mixture into the baked potatoes and crumble over as much feta as you desire.

Bad-a-bing, bad-a-boom – easy peasy baked potato treats in a fraction of the time it would take in the oven.

How to: Make a Boxcar

Greetings all! Yes, it’s time for that next fix of knowledge and wisdom to be passed down to you by those crazy cats down at Boxerchip HQ. ‘What do we have in store this time?’ I hear you cry. No need to fret little Spudmuckers, it’s a cracker. We have been re-living our childhood fantasies, and have mastered the art of constructing a boxcar! Yes you heard right, a boxcar – that nifty vehicle usually made of wood and commonly used in competitions. Now, before we reveal the art of building the ultimate boxcar, here are a few driving tips (not that you need them of course). To steer the little fellow you have to be sure to use both your feet and hands at the same time – it’s all very quirky we know. Finally, you will need a hill – but, my friends, do try to supress your cocky streak. The steeper the hill doesn’t actually make the Spudmucker or Spudmuckerette, oh no, the not so steep hills will actually allow you to ride along for longer – giving you more time to show off your skills! So here goes: here’s how to make the ultimate boxcar.

First things first here’s a list of bits and pieces you will be needing:

  • Hammer

  • Screwdriver

  • Wood saw

  • Nails

  • Screws

  • Rope

  • Wood planks

  • A bolt for a steering pivot

  • 4 wheels with axle bars

  • A ready-made seat for the driver’s seat

Step 1

Cut the ‘chassis plank’ to size. This jazzy-named number is the longest plank, and will support the rear axle and seat at one end of the boxcar and the steering axle plank at the other, so it’s a bit of a big-dog in the boxcar construction world.

The length will depend on your height. Cars are typically between 48 and 72 inches (120 to 200 cm) in length.

The width will depend on the width of your bottom. Cars are typically 24 to 36 inches (60 to 100 cm) wide.

Step 2

Cut the axle planks to length. These need to be longer than your chassis plank is wide, plus enough to allow the wheels to turn about 30 degrees in either direction.

Step 3

Make the pivot. Drill a hole through the front end of the chassis and the middle of the front axle plank to make the pivot point for the steering plank. Fix the steering plank to the chassis plank using the bolt.

Step 4

Attach the rear axle plank. Fix the middle of the rear axle plank square to the chassis at the back end. Still keeping up? Jolly good, let us continue.

Step 5

Next, attach the rear axle plank. Fix the middle of the rear axle plank square to the chassis at the back end.

Step 6

Fix the axle bars to the axle planks. Secure them well with four or more U-brackets spaced evenly across the axel.

Step 7 

Add the seat. Fix it to the chassis and rear axle plank. The rear axle plank should be underneath the chassis.

Step 8 

Build the steering. Drill a hole through the chassis behind the left and right sides of the steering plank, and slip the rope ends through. Attach to the steering plank near the left and right ends of the plank for maximum efficiency. Make the rope loop a comfortable length for the driver when he is seated (your life is in their hands after all).

Step 9

Slide the wheels onto the axles and secure them.

Ta da! One fully functioning boxcar! Go have fun you little rascals…

Winter Warmer Potato Recipes

Brrrr, howdy there spudmuckers! Now I don’t know about all of you but here at Boxerchip HQ we are freezing our tootsies off, and are pretty fed up of the crazy weather. Sadly, although we possess many powers, we do not have the clout to control good old Mother Nature (she really does have a bee in her bonnet at the moment eh?). However, whilst the storms may rage on you can be sure that the spud will be there to help you through these dark winter days. With you solely in mind we have been kind enough to rustle up some winter warmer recipes that are sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Loaded Baked Potato Soup

This is a hearty winter warmer that is surprisingly good for the waistline weighing in at only 159 calories (in that case I’ll have two bowls please).

Right, to make this delectable delight; fill a large pot with 6 white diced potatoes and salted water. Bring to the boil and cook until the potatoes are ‘fork tender’ – by our calculations this should take around 15 minutes. When they have reached this stage drain them, and set them aside.

While the potatoes are cooking get ahead of the game and line a baking try with parchment paper. Next, prepare one head of broccoli chopped into bite size pieces. Place the broccoli on to the prepared baking tray, drizzle (lightly) with 1 teaspoon of olive oil, add a pinch of salt and a half a teaspoon of garlic. Finally, roast in the oven for 20 minutes until crispy – note crispy does not mean burnt, our little spudmuckers.

Heat some olive oil in a pan over a medium heat and sauté one chopped leek, along with half a teaspoon of crushed red pepper and some garlic until the leeks have softened. Add 2 cups of frozen cauliflower and two cups of vegetable broth (top tip: look for stocks low in sodium; the body is a temple and all that jazz). Increase the heat and cook until the cauliflower is soft, once it’s cooked remove the pot from the heat, add the potatoes you previously set aside, plus 2 cups of 1% fat milk (you can buy it from any supermarket and it tastes exactly the same as semi-skimmed – genius!)

Transfer your mixture to a blender and puree until the soup is smooth and creamy. To serve garnish your masterpiece with some grated cheddar cheese, the roasted broccoli, pieces of bacon (cooked previously) and some chives.

Italian Red Pepper and Potato Stew

In a large pan sauté one chopped red onion in some olive oil over a high heat, when it has softened and is beginning to brown add a few cloves of chopped garlic in. Continue to cook for a few minutes then add 8 bell peppers (maybe two of each colour) seeded and sliced. Lower the heat and stir well, partially cover the pan with the lid and allow them to soften for about 10 minutes.

Next, add half a can of Pelati potatoes (blended until they are smooth) along with 1 pound of russet scrubbed and cut into cubes. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste, stir well over medium-low heat, and cook for about 1 hour.

To help the sauce come together add a cup of vegetable stock, ladling it in to the mixture when needed. The type of tomatoes you’re using and the ripeness of the peppers may have a bearing on how much stock you need to use, a handy way to gauge if you need more is to remember that the final consistency of the stew should be thicker than a pasta sauce.
